Things worth knowing before you go
The car goes up with you
This is the one Rajasthan fort where having your own vehicle transforms the visit. The plateau road is a full circuit — Vijay Stambh, Rani Padmini's palace, Kalika Mata, Gaumukh reservoir. On foot you will see the first two and give up.
Go anticlockwise
Most visitors turn right at the top and bunch up at Vijay Stambh. Turn left, do Kalika Mata and the Padmini palace first, and meet the crowds on your way out.
The drive is the dull part
NH48 is efficient and boring. This is the trip where an audiobook earns its place, and where a sedan is a better choice than an SUV.

The fort is vast and drivable inside. Do not attempt it on foot in one visit — you will see a quarter of it.

The honest bit
230 km for one fort is a lot of road. If Kumbhalgarh is already on your list and you only have time for one, Kumbhalgarh is the better drive and Chittorgarh is the better history.
